A blast from the past!
The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. system is out now, a classic yet new handheld console that includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Ball (Mario Version) and a digital clock. Take a look at our list below to see what you can discover – there’s more than what meets the eye!
1) Skip to your favourite world
Pressing the B button on the title screen of either Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels allows you to select a World you’ve reached before and start from course 1 – a feature not possible in the original games!
2) For an easier time
Starting Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels while holding the A button activates Infinite Mario mode, where you’ll have an endless amount of Marios (also known as “lives”)! This lets you challenge the toughest of stages without having to worry about hitting that dreaded GAME OVER screen, something that wasn’t possible in the originals. Mario lives on…and on!
(You can switch back to the games’ normal setting by pressing the PAUSE/SET button to open the menu, then selecting RESET GAME.)
3) Play as Luigi in Ball
Ball with the bro! Holding down the A button on the title screen of Ball (Mario Version) for five seconds lets you play as his younger brother, Luigi.
4) Unlock a harder difficulty
If you complete Super Mario Bros. in its entirety, you’ll unlock a new harder difficulty mode. This feature was also present in the original game, though it would no longer be accessible if you turned the game off! In HARD mode, you’ll encounter tougher enemies in unexpected locations…
5) Watch out for these nifty animations
Time for fun! As you may already know, the system’s digital clock contains 35 little touches to discover that’ll show up as time passes. Here’s a few to look out for, but there are lots more to find!
07:00 – 07:59 (AM/PM): Monty Mole will unearth himself and begin running around.
05:55 (AM/PM): Blocks that make up the clock’s numbers will turn into Coins, making it a rich time for everyone!
01:11 (AM/PM): Three Bloopers will appear and swim through the air to the top of the screen.
6) Unlock a secret World
Completing Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels will add a lovely star to its title screen. Get eight stars by completing the game eight times, and you’ll have access to the secret World A – containing four stages – by pressing the B button on the title screen! Heads up, Koopa Troopas move faster than usual…
