22 Questions and Answers About amiibo

December 06, 2014

On Nov. 20, @NintendoAmerica hosted a Twitter Q&A with Bill Trinen, Nintendo of America’s senior product marketing manager and video game expert.

Fans submitted questions using the #amiiboquestions hashtag, and Bill answered as many as he could about amiibo characters, Nintendo’s first step into the toys-to-life category. Below is an edited transcript of that conversation.

Q: Bill, who’s your favorite amiibo character?

A: My favorite amiibo is Zelda. Zelda was my main [character] in [Super Smash Bros.] Melee, and I just love the detail on her amiibo.

Q: Can you register your name when you have an amiibo for the first time?

A: With each amiibo you register an owner (Mii character) and can assign the amiibo a nickname. You can do this either in the amiibo menu under Games & More in Super Smash Bros. or in amiibo system settings.

Q: Does the level of your amiibo vary from game to game? Are levels gained differently per game?

A: amiibo work in different games in different ways. Your level in Super Smash Bros. won’t translate to other games, but you can use the same amiibo w/other games.

Q: If I take my amiibo to a friend’s house, will it work the same as it would on my own copy of Smash?

A: Yes! You can take your amiibo to your friend’s house and tap your amiibo into battle there!

Q: Is it possible to play as an amiibo?

A: In Super Smash Bros. your amiibo becomes your partner. You train them, up, fight vs them, & customize their moves.

Q: What’s the date for round two of the amiibo?

A: Look for the next round of 6 amiibo coming in December, with the third wave of 11 amiibo launching in February!

Q: If I used a Link amiibo for Smash Bros. and then for Hyrule Warriors, will the save data on Smash Bros. be deleted?

A: Hyrule Warriors just reads the amiibo, so you will not lose your Smash Bros. data when using it w/Hyrule Warriors.

Q: Will amiibo be available in more games other than Smash, Mario Kart, or Hyrule Warriors?

A: Yes! Some Smash Bros. amiibo will work in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Yoshi’s Wooly World and Mario Party 10 next year.

Q: Will I be able to use an amiibo even if I buy it as “Used”?

A: You will. But before you sell an amiibo (or use a used one) be sure to erase all data on it first.

Q: Is the plural of “amiibo” just “amiibo” or “amiibos”?

A: The plural of amiibo is amiibo, whether you have one or 12, or 18, or…

Q: In Smash, will you be able to customize specific play styles (i.e., defensive, aggressive, avoidance) to your amiibo?

A: You will. Your amiibo learns from the opponent it faces. You can try different tactics to train it in different ways.

Q: Can multiple amiibo be used in the same battle by one person?

A: Yes! In fact, if you don’t have 7 friends handy you can tap in 7 amiibo and still play 8-player Smash!

Q: Will an amiibo still work if I don’t have the character unlocked in Smash Bros.?

A: The first two waves of amiibo are already unlocked. Hopefully by February you’ve unlocked everyone!

Q: How fragile are they??

A: Not very fragile. We generally try to design things so even young kids who aren’t gentle w/them won’t break them.

Q: How awesome is the Captain Falcon amiibo?

A: The Capt. Falcon amiibo is full of awesome. And muscular thighs. Plus he works with Mario Kart 8.

Q: How did Nintendo come up with the name amiibo?

A: The amii in amiibo can mean friend or buddy in Japan. So, think of them all as your little buddies, little buddy.

Q: Can we use the amiibo in the package? I want to keep mine sealed as collector’s items!

A: Sorry. You can’t use the package. User data is saved to amiibo so they are not readable at stores and in the package.

Q: Will amiibo work with at least one more game? Example: Any plans for Wii Fit Trainer?

A: Wii Fit Trainer will work with Hyrule Warriors for in-game bonuses like any other amiibo.

Q: Hi Bill. Does getting an amiibo like in that Smash Bros. amiibo demo video help me get a girlfriend?

A: ACTUAL RESULTS MAY VARY.

Q: So can we watch two amiibo battle it out?

A: Yes! You can battle against your amiibo or alongside your amiibo & can also watch amiibo battle vs one another.

Q: Will there be future sets of amiibo such as a Mario Kart themed set or a Mario Party themed set?

A: The Super Smash Bros. series is the 1st. There will be future amiibo series, but that’s all I can say today.

Q: Will there be any special edition amiibo in the future?

A: We haven’t announced plans for any special edition amiibo just yet, but it’s always a possibility.
