Tips to Catch Cresselia in Raid Battles

It’s time to shift from spooky Ghost types to the light of the moon, Trainers. The Lunar Pokémon, Cresselia, is joining the fray in Pokémon GO Raid Battles! It’s said that those who sleep holding Cresselia’s feather are assured of joyful dreams, but there’s no time to rest—this Psychic-type Pokémon will be available in Pokémon GO Gyms only until December 18, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. PST. Make sure to bring your friends along with you when you challenge Cresselia—you may earn some extra Premier Balls if you do, and you’ll need a sizable group to take down the sturdy Legendary Pokémon!

To catch Cresselia, you can use only the Premier Balls you earn from defeating it, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Help your team take over the Gym before the raid starts, battle alongside your friends, and pick Pokémon that will perform well in battle to maximize your chances. Check out our guide to training Pokémon in Pokémon GO to get your team up to speed, and then read on for some tips specific to Cresselia.

Suggested Pokémon

Many of the same Pokémon you used against Giratina last month will also be effective against Cresselia because the two share weaknesses to Ghost-type and Dark-type attacks. This Psychic type’s only other weakness is against the poorly represented Bug type, so hopefully you stocked up on spooky Pokémon during the Halloween event! We’ll list the top-performing Pokémon from each type, but you can feel confident with any of the strongest Bug-type, Ghost-type, and Dark-type Pokémon you have available. Be aware that Cresselia is a particularly hearty Pokémon—it won’t deal as much damage as some other Raid Bosses, but it’ll require a larger group to take down before time expires.

Dark-type Pokémon are typically the safest solutions to Cresselia. Their Dark-type attacks will deal extra damage, and they’ll also take reduced damage from Cresselia’s Psychic-type attacks. A Tyranitar that knows Bite and Crunch is an excellent all-around combatant, while a Houndoom wielding Snarl and Foul Play can dish out plenty of damage, though it takes more in return because of its lower defensive stats. If you happen to have the powerful Pokémon Honchkrow and Weavile, you should definitely add them to your team. Avoid loading your party with Dark types if Cresselia knows Moonblast, which will deal sizable damage to these Pokémon.

Ghost-type attackers tend to offer higher damage than their Dark-type counterparts, but they won’t be able to endure as many attacks. A Gengar that knows Lick from the Gengar Special Raid Challenge and Shadow Ball from a Charged TM will deal more damage to Cresselia than any other Pokémon. The next-best wielder of Ghost-type attacks is a Mewtwo that knows Shadow Ball from its stint as an EX Raid Boss, and as a Psychic type, it won’t take much damage from Cresselia’s attacks. Banette rounds out the group of typical top-flight Ghost types, but Mismagius trumps it if you have one available.

Even November’s Bug-themed Field Research probably won’t be enough to provide you with strong enough Pokémon to take advantage of Cresselia’s weakness to Bug-type attacks. Consider powering up a Pinsir if you caught a horde during a recent event—it’s not a Pokémon many Trainers invest in, but it can dish out Bug-type damage faster than any other Pokémon available. The Bug- and Steel-type Scizor provides a balance of solid offense and defense, though other Steel-type Pokémon like Metagross are worth considering if you’d like to prioritize defense, since they’ll resist all of Cresselia’s attacks.

Cresselia’s limited weaknesses mean that you’re more likely than normal to need to round out your team with Pokémon that have their attacks enhanced by the weather. Remember to deploy your Fire types under the sun, your Dragon types when it’s windy, and your Water types and Electric types when it’s rainy to get an extra boost. Make time to battle Cresselia if you have fog in your area—that weather condition will boost both Ghost- and Dark-type attacks.

Get in Sync

Make each Premier Ball you earn count because you’ll have a limited amount to catch Cresselia with once you’ve defeated it. You can earn extra Premier Balls if you defeat Cresselia alongside your friends, so be sure to bring them with you. Use a Golden Razz Berry before each throw, and remember to stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.

The odds of capturing Cresselia are greatest while the target ring is at a small enough diameter to score Excellent Throws, and throwing Curveballs can improve your chances further. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can hit Excellent Curveballs reliably, aim for Nice or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.

Be careful not to waste your Premier Balls by throwing while Cresselia is moving around. Wait for it to start acting up and for its target ring to disappear, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.

Cresselia is an exceptionally difficult Pokémon to catch, so don’t be discouraged if it gets away the first time you defeat it. Stock up on useful items like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries, and try again later with some friends. Good luck with your next Raid Battle, and remember to check back to Pokemon.com/Strategy for more Pokémon GO, video game, and Pokémon TCG tips.
