The newest Raid Boss is a long-awaited challenger—the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo is finally available outside of EX Raids! Mewtwo is one of the most powerful combatants in the world of Pokémon, so this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. Get out there and challenge it before it stops appearing as a Raid Boss on October 23 at 1:00 p.m. PDT. And bring your friends along with you when you do—you may earn some extra Premier Balls thanks to a recent update.
You’ll only be able to use the Premier Balls you earn from defeating Mewtwo to catch it, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Try to take over the Gym before the Raid starts, battle alongside your friends, and pick Pokémon that will perform well in battle to maximize your chances. Suggested Pokémon
The Psychic-type Mewtwo is weak against Bug-, Ghost-, and Dark-type attacks, but taking advantage of those weaknesses can be difficult. Neither Bug- nor Ghost-type Pokémon resist Psychic-type attacks, so you’ll often have to take damage to deal damage in this battle. Two Pokémon types that resist Mewtwo’s Psychic-type attacks—Dark and Steel—are even weak against Focus Blast, the Fighting-type Charged Attack that Mewtwo may know. Adjust your strategy once you see Mewtwo’s moves to keep your Pokémon on their feet.
Tyranitar is the simplest solution to Mewtwo that do not know Focus Blast. Its Bite and Crunch attacks are a supereffective way to taste victory, and this Pokémon resists Mewtwo’s Psychic-type attacks. Tyranitar’s stats tower above most other Dark types, but Houndoom, Sharpedo, and Absol that know Dark-type attacks can also dish out quick bursts of damage. Scizor rounds out the group of quality attackers resistant to Psychic-type attacks, though it should use Bug-type attacks instead of Dark.
Mewtwo that know Focus Blast can be trickier to handle. If you have a Mewtwo of your own that knows Shadow Ball, it’s fantastic for both offense and defense in this encounter. Otherwise, look to the ghostly Gengar and Banette, Pinsir, high-level Rayquaza, and even Gyarados that know Dark-type attacks. These Pokémon will take reduced damage from Focus Blast while dealing sizable damage in return.
Mewtwo’s best counters can be a little niche, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t have many of the Pokémon we’ve mentioned so far. Defeating Mewtwo will be an uphill battle, so fill out your roster with your most trusted attackers and keep tapping until the Legendary Pokémon falls.
Engineer a Catch
You’ll have limited Premier Balls to catch Mewtwo once you’ve defeated it, so make each one count. You can earn extra Premier Balls if you defeat Mewtwo alongside your friends, so be sure to bring them with you. Use a Golden Razz Berry before each throw, and remember to stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.
The odds of capturing Mewtwo are greatest while the target ring is at a small enough diameter to score Excellent Throws, and throwing Curveballs can improve your chances further. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can hit Excellent Curveballs reliably, aim for Nice or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.
Be careful not to waste your Premier Balls by throwing while Mewtwo is moving around. Wait for it to start acting up and for its target ring to disappear, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.
Mewtwo is an exceptionally difficult Pokémon to catch, so don’t be discouraged if it gets away the first time you defeat it. Stock up on useful items like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries, and try again later with some friends.
