Tips to Roll Over Regirock in Raids!

With Regice and Registeel defeated, only one member of this trio of Legendary Pokémon remains. Regirock will be appearing in Raid Battles at Gyms in Pokémon GO until September 20, 2018. You’ll only have a limited time to add this Pokémon to your Pokédex, so don’t delay. Be sure to bring your friends along with you when you challenge Regirock—you may earn some extra Premier Balls thanks to a recent update.

Regirock can be caught only with the Premier Balls you earn from defeating it, so you’ll need your Pokémon to perform well in battle to maximize your chances. You can participate in Raid Battles even if you’re not high-level or if your Pokémon aren’t the strongest, but you’ll have an easier time if you prepare. Check out our guide to training Pokémon in Pokémon GO to get your team up to speed, and then read on for some tips specific to eroding Regirock.

Suggested Pokémon

The Rock-type Legendary Pokémon Regirock is weak against Water-, Grass-, Fighting-, Ground-, and Steel-type attacks. You probably won’t have a tough time building a team that can exploit Regirock’s plentiful weaknesses, so you may want to change the members of your party to suit the weather. You’ll mostly need to defend against Fighting-type and Rock-type attacks from Regirock, but be warned that it can also use the Electric-type Charged Attack Zap Cannon.

Many Trainers are likely to encounter Regirock during clear, sunny weather during these hot summer months. Deploying a garden of Grass-type Pokémon is the best way to take advantage of the sun, and none perform better than a Venusaur that knows Frenzy Plant from a past Community Day. A Groudon doing its best imitation of a Grass-type by using Solar Beam is the next best Pokémon under the sun, followed by more traditional Grass-type attackers including Victreebel, Exeggutor, Sceptile, Shiftry, and Breloom.

Machamp continues its tour de force against Legendary Pokémon as one of the best all-around Pokémon for yet another encounter, and it’ll be even stronger if the clouds grant you a reprieve from the sun. Though second to Machamp, Hariyama is the number one contender among Fighting-type Pokémon, and you can feel confident in Heracross, Blaziken, and Breloom’s damage output in cloudy weather, too. (But be warned— they’ll take far more damage from most of Regirock’s attacks.) A Mewtwo that knows Focus Blast will do a little less damage overall than the actual Fighting types, but it’s a great way to outmuscle Regirock that also know Fighting-type attacks.

August showers bring September Legendary Pokémon, so be sure to use your Water-type Pokémon to take down Regirock if you’re caught in some summer rain. Kyogre is the best option by far, but plenty of other Water types can make waves if you missed out on the Legendary Pokémon. Gyarados and Swampert are the next best choices available, while Blastoise that know Hydro Cannon, Starmie, Omastar, and Sharpedo will perform similarly to top Fighting-type Pokémon while it’s raining.

Most Pokémon that can exploit Regirock’s weaknesses to Ground-type and Steel-type attacks tend to be trumped by top performers like Machamp, Breloom, Hariyama, Kyogre, and Groudon, so you may want to keep them in reserve. Rayquaza is weak against Regirock’s Rock-type attacks, but its damage output during windy weather is tough to beat. Steel-type Pokémon are solid defensive choices for this battle if you’re just looking to survive—and who could say no to the oft-suggested Aggron?

Stone Cold Focus

You’ll have limited Premier Balls to catch Regirock once you’ve defeated it, so make each one count. You’ll earn extra Premier Balls if you defeat Regirock alongside your friends, so be sure to bring them along. Use a Golden Razz Berry before each throw, and remember to stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.

The odds of capturing Regirock are greatest while the target ring is at a small enough diameter to score Nice, Great, or Excellent Throws, and throwing Curveballs can improve your chances further. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can hit Excellent Curveballs reliably, aim for Nice or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely. Regirock is one of the larger, clumsier Legendary Pokémon, so this may be a good opportunity to work on your technique and shoot for Excellent Throws.

Be careful not to waste your Premier Balls by throwing while Regirock is moving around. Wait for it to start acting up and for its target ring to disappear, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.

Legendary Pokémon are tough to catch, so don’t be discouraged if Regirock gets away the first time you defeat it. Stock up on useful items, like Max Potions and Max Revives, then try again later with some friends. Good luck with your next Raid Battle, and remember to check back at Pokemon.com/Strategy for more Pokémon GO, video game, and Pokémon TCG tips.
