Set Sail for Kyogre in Pokémon GO
You’ve had a chance to expand continents with Groudon—now try expanding the seas as the Legendary Pokémon Kyogre surfaces around the globe in Raid Battles at Gyms. The Legendary Pokémon’s high stats and rarity are sure to make it a desirable addition to many Trainers’ collections. Don’t wait too long to capture a Kyogre of your own, because it will be available only until February 14, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. PST.
Kyogre can be caught only with the Premier Balls you earn from defeating it, so you’ll need your Pokémon to perform well in battle to maximize your chances. You can take on Kyogre even if you’re not high level or your Pokémon aren’t the toughest ones around, but you’ll have an easier time if you prepare. Suggested Pokémon
Kyogre is one of the most powerful Legendary Pokémon. Prepare yourself for a tough battle by planning a party tailored to take it on. As a Water-type Pokémon, Kyogre is weak only against Electric- and Grass-type attacks. Its sole Fast Attack—Waterfall—is a Water-type attack, while its Charged Attack may be an Electric-type Thunder, Ice-type Blizzard, or Water-type Hydro Pump.
Electric-type Pokémon are reliable choices regardless of Kyogre’s moves. Their Electric-type attacks will deal supereffective damage to Kyogre, while none of Kyogre’s attacks are super effective in return. Raikou will be the most effective Electric-type Pokémon by far, with Zapdos and Jolteon trailing afterward. (Take note that Blizzard will be super effective against the Flying-type Zapdos.) Add Magneton, Ampharos, and other Electric-type Pokémon to your party only once you’ve exhausted these.
Grass-type Pokémon resist Water-type attacks, so they might be your top performers against a Kyogre that knows Hydro Pump. But Grass-type Pokémon are weak against Ice-type attacks, so you may not want to deploy them if Kyogre knows Blizzard. If you’ve already spent the time to train up a Sceptile, it’ll pay dividends here. Most Trainers will need to rely on Exeggutor or Venusaur instead, with Meganium, Tangela, and Victreebel standing out as the best alternatives. Whichever Grass-type Pokémon you use, make sure they know Grass-type attacks—none of these Pokémon are optimal choices solely for their stats.
Since Kyogre only has two weaknesses, you may need to find a few more Pokémon to fill out a party with high CP Pokémon. Keep Kyogre’s attacks in mind. A Kyogre that knows Thunder will have a hard time matching up against a Groudon that knows Solar Beam. On the other hand, a Kyogre that knows Blizzard gives you an opening to counter with your own Solar Beam wielder in Ho-Oh. Dragonite can be deployed against a Kyogre that knows only Water-type attacks—and don’t forget about Mewtwo for quick bursts of damage, if you’re fortunate enough to have caught one.

Electric-type attacks will also be amplified during rainfall, so make sure to match Kyogre’s advantage with one of your own. Then, too, Kyogre’s cold Blizzard will bite harder when snowflakes are falling, so take care battling Kyogre in snowy weather. Clear skies are most to your advantage: Kyogre will gain no benefit, but your Grass-type Pokémon will deal increased damage—and it’ll probably be more pleasant for you, too!
Net Yourself a Kyogre
You won’t get many Premier Balls to catch Kyogre once you’ve defeated it, so make each one count. Use a Golden Razz Berry before each throw. Take the opportunity to stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.
The odds of capturing Kyogre are greatest while the target ring is at a small-enough diameter to score Nice, Great, or Excellent Throws, and throwing Curveballs can improve your chances even more. But work within your abilities! If you don’t think you can hit Excellent Curveballs reliably, aim for Nice or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.
You may waste your Premier Balls if your target is moving around when you throw them. Wait for Kyogre to start acting up and for the target ring to disappear while it’s a size you’re comfortable throwing into, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.
Legendary Pokémon are tough to catch, so don’t be discouraged if Kyogre gets away the first time you defeat it. You can stock up on useful items like Max Potions and Max Revives and try again later.
