Ring in the New Year with Pokémon GO’s January 2021 Events

Enjoy a fun-filled January with a New Year’s event, exciting Pokémon in raids, the introduction of Collection Challenges, and more.

December 22, 2020

A new year is just around the corner, and with it comes exciting new opportunities to catch Pokémon, take part in raids, complete challenging research, and adventure in Pokémon GO. The fun kicks off on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at 10:00 p.m. local time with a themed event featuring costumed Pokémon—including a Slowpoke wearing 2020 glasses. Timely as always! These costumed Pokémon will be appearing until Monday, January 4, 2021, at 10:00 p.m. local time.

The new year also brings a new lineup of Pokémon in raids. Throughout January, five-star raids will feature Legendary and Mythical Pokémon like Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Groudon, Heatran, Genesect holding a Burn Drive, and a special surprise Pokémon. In Mega Raids, you can look forward to seeing Pokémon like Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Blastoise, Mega Houndoom, and Mega Abomasnow, along with another surprise Pokémon that will be making its Pokémon GO debut.

Pokémon Spotlight Hour will occur every Tuesday in January from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. local time. On January 5, Lillipup will be appearing in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Stardust for catching Pokémon. A week later on January 12, Drifloon will be appearing in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the XP for catching Pokémon. Shroomish will be featured in the spotlight on January 19, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for catching Pokémon. Finally, Phanpy will claim the spotlight on January 26, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for transferring Pokémon.

In addition, Chansey will be available as a Research Breakthrough encounter from Friday, January 1, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. until Monday, February 1, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. PST (GMT −8).

The holidays may eventually come to a close, but the surprises never stop coming in Pokémon GO! In early January, you can look forward to the launch of Collection Challenges, a new feature that will provide handy guides to catching featured Pokémon during in-game events. Keep an eye on the in-game News for additional information.

Happy New Year!
