Cobalion Pokémon GO Raid Battle Tips

The Iron Will Pokémon, Cobalion, is galloping into Pokémon GO Raid Battles as the first representative of the Legendary Pokémon from the Unova region. Show your own iron will by catching Cobalion after defeating it in battle from November 4, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. PST, until November 26 at 1:00 p.m. PST. The trio of Legendary Pokémon that Cobalion belongs to are rarely seen apart, so look forward to meeting Terrakion and Virizion soon.

The Premier Balls you earn when defeating Cobalion will be the only Poké Balls you can use to catch it, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Maximize your chances by helping your team take over the Gym before the raid starts, battling alongside your friends, and picking Pokémon that will perform well in battle. Make sure to learn how to train Pokémon in Pokémon GO to get your team up to speed, and then read on for some tips specific to the Iron Will Pokémon.

Tips for Battling Cobalion in Pokémon GO

Focus on Fire- and Fighting-type attackers. You’ll damage Cobalion the fastest by using attackers of these types. Let newcomer Chandelure light the way, if you’ve been lucky enough to train one up already. But even if you haven’t, Machamp, Blaziken, Breloom, and Legendary Fire-type Pokémon are sure to put the hurt on Cobalion. Flareon and Hariyama are solid backups. Cobalion is also weak to Ground-type attacks, but with the exception of perhaps Excadrill, even the best Ground-type attackers won’t put out damage comparable to their Fire- and Fighting-type counterparts.

Consider the weather. Cobalion has picked a wise time to make its appearance, because it’s not likely to be sunny in much of the world. Be sure to focus on using Fire types when the weather is clear, as they’ll do extra damage with Fire-type attacks. If you live in an area where cloudy skies are more common this time of year, your Fighting-type Pokémon will be in luck. Machamp becomes the optimal attacker in such conditions, and you’ll probably want to fill out the rest of your roster with Fighting-type Pokémon, too.

Play around Cobalion’s attacks. You won’t know which attacks the specific Cobalion you’re fighting will use until after you’ve seen the Pokémon in action, but if you do happen to learn its moves, you can tailor your team a little to reduce the amount of healing items you’ll need to use. Cobalion may know Zen Headbutt, which deals supereffective damage to Fighting-type Pokémon. It may also know Stone Edge, which deals supereffective damage to Fire-type Pokémon (but will be resisted by Fighting-type Pokémon). You may want to try to avoid these bad matchups if you know in advance you could be dealing with them.

Throw Your Premier Balls Carefully against Legendary Pokémon

You’ll earn a limited number of Premier Balls by defeating Cobalion, and you must use these to catch it, so take careful aim to make each one count. If you battle alongside your friends, you can earn extra Premier Balls, so be sure to bring friends with you. Using a Golden Razz Berry before each throw will vastly increase your chances of success. You can stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.

Your chance of capturing a Pokémon is greatest when the size of the target ring is small enough for you to score Excellent Throws. Throwing Curveballs can improve your chances even more. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can reliably make Excellent Curveball Throws, aim for Nice Throws or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.

Be careful not to waste your Premier Balls by throwing while the Pokémon is moving around. Wait for it to start acting up and for its target ring to disappear, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.

Like all Legendary Pokémon, Cobalion is tricky to catch, so don’t be discouraged if it escapes your first encounter. Stock up on useful items, like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries, and try again later with some friends. Good luck with your next Raid Battle, and remember to check back to Pokemon.com/Strategy for more Pokémon GO, video game, and Pokémon TCG tips.
