Catch Up on Ash’s Alolan Journey!
Get ready for Sun & Moon—Ultra Adventures by revisiting what Ash, Pikachu, and their friends have been up to!
March 21, 2018
The 21st season of Pokémon the Series is upon us! We’re all excited to find out what new journeys Ash undertakes as Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon—Ultra Adventures begins, but first let’s take a look back at some major events that unfolded in the previous season, Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon.
The season begins with Ash and his mother taking a vacation to Melemele Island, a tropical paradise in the Alola region (“Alola to New Adventure!”). Ash meets Samson Oak, cousin of Kanto’s Professor Oak and principal of the island’s Pokémon School. Excited by the beauty of the island and the promise of new Pokémon to discover, Ash decides to stay behind and enroll in the Pokémon School.
Friends Till the End
Ash has no trouble making new friends wherever his journey takes him—including the Alola region! It isn’t long before he’s joined by new classmates and mentors on his island adventure. Of those new allies, perhaps none has been as helpful to Ash as Professor Kukui, a teacher at the Pokémon School who offers him a place to stay in Alola. Professor Kukui also gives Ash an Alola region Pokédex—which quickly gains a personality of its own when a Pokémon called Rotom decides to live inside it (“Loading the Dex!”).
While at the Pokémon School, Ash forges strong bonds with the other students. His new friends include Lillie, Kiawe and his partner Turtonator, Lana and her partner Popplio, Sophocles and his partner Togedemaru, and Mallow and her partner Bounsweet. These young Trainers remain steadfast allies of Ash and Pikachu throughout the season.
Just like Ash’s past adventures in other regions, his time in Alola wouldn’t be complete without catching (and evolving) some new Pokémon! During the course of the season, Ash welcomes Rowlet (“First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!”), Rockruff (“Rocking Clawmark Hill!”), and Litten (“One Journey Ends, Another Begins…”) to his team of Pokémon pals. Sophocles catches an electrifying Charjabug (“So Long, Sophocles!”), while Kiawe teams up with a feisty Alolan Marowak (“A Crowning Moment of Truth!”).
The students’ Pokémon get even more powerful when Mallow’s Bounsweet evolves into Steenee (“A Seasoned Search!”) and Ash’s Rockruff evolves into a mighty Dusk Form Lycanroc (“Rising from the Ruins!”).
Now Our Journey’s Begun
Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon marks Ash’s first encounter with powerful Z-Moves. Not long after Ash’s arrival in the Alola region, he’s confronted by Tapu Koko, the Island Guardian of Melemele, who gives him a Z-Ring (“Alola to New Adventure!”). This inspires Ash to embark on Alola’s island challenge so he can earn Z-Crystals and use Z-Moves. Ash isn’t the only student getting in on the Z-Move action—after defeating a Totem Wishiwashi, Lana receives a Water-type Z-Crystal (“Big Sky, Small Fry!”).
It’s not all rest and relaxation on Melemele Island, though. Ash and Pikachu should always prepare for trouble—because it’s not long before the villainous Team Rocket arrives on the scene! The Boss has sent Jessie, James, and Meowth to Alola to capture Pokémon unique to the region. It’s not long before they resume making life miserable for Ash and his friends.
Even Team Rocket manages to get their hands on a couple of new Pokémon in the Alola region. Jessie captures a Mimikyu who has a nasty grudge against Pikachu (“First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!”), and James catches a Mareanie who’s incredibly fond of him (“The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!”). The troublesome trio has even been “adopted” by a wild Bewear who frequently appears out of nowhere just in time to rescue them before Ash and Pikachu are about to send them blasting off again (“Loading the Dex!”).
Team Rocket isn’t the only nefarious element in the Alola region. Ash and his friends also run afoul of Team Skull, a gang of ruffians who love to cause mayhem (“Alola to New Adventure!”). Ash tends to cross paths with three particular members of Team Skull—Tupp, the leader, and his cohorts, Rapp and Zipp. Although they talk tough, these punks can never seem to defeat Ash, Pikachu, and their friends.
Team Skull even faces off against Team Rocket in a dispute over a Dark-type Z-Crystal (“A Team-on-Team Tussle!”). Although it’s a fierce competition involving a battle with a Totem Raticate, Team Rocket is able to claim the Z-Crystal as their own—but they can’t use it because they don’t have a Z-Ring!
I’m a Little Bit Stronger
In between classes and fighting off nefarious teams, Ash sets his sights on a series of trials that make up the island challenge. These trials are an opportunity for Ash to show off his skills as a Pokémon Trainer—and to earn a Z-Crystal! He first battles a Totem Gumshoos in an effort to recruit it and its allies to help clear a town of Alolan Rattata and Alolan Raticate (“To Top a Totem!”). And his first grand trial is a good-old-fashioned Pokémon battle against Hala, the kahuna of Melemele Island (“Trial and Tribulation!”).
Ash’s next trial is a bit unorthodox. He is tasked with obtaining ingredients for a batch of Akala Curry, but before he can gather the proper herbs and berries, he must face off against a Totem Lurantis (“Currying Favor and Flavor!”). After helping create the curry as a preliminary trial, Ash faces off against Kahuna Olivia in the grand trial. His Rowlet and Rockruff engage in a fierce Double Battle with Olivia’s Pokémon and ultimately emerge victorious (“Trials and Determinations!”)!
I Only Wish Each Day Was Longer
In addition to the powerful island kahunas, Ash also meets Gladion, Lillie’s older brother. Gladion has a strong bond with his Pokémon and proves himself to be a capable Trainer, defeating Team Skull and Team Rocket with little effort. Not surprisingly, Ash hopes to defeat Gladion in a Pokémon battle someday (“A Glaring Rivalry!”).
Lillie’s brother may make a challenging rival for Ash, but Lillie herself proves to be a faithful friend. The demure Lillie grows as a person quite a bit during Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. At first, she’s afraid of touching Pokémon—even friendly ones like Pikachu. For a class project, however, she’s assigned to take care of a Pokémon Egg (“Lillie’s Egg-Xhilarating Challenge!”). When the Egg hatches into an Alolan Vulpix, Lillie names it Snowy and agrees to be its Trainer. At first, Lillie’s old fears threaten her relationship with Snowy, but when Team Rocket attempts to steal her new partner, Lillie overcomes her phobia and saves the day (“Getting to Know You!”)!
Season 20 wraps up when the Pokémon School students take an exciting trip to Ash’s home turf—the Kanto region! Ash is excited to introduce all his new friends to his old traveling companions Misty and Brock (“Alola, Kanto!”). And what better way to be welcomed to a new region than with a Pokémon battle? Mallow, Lana, Sophocles, Lillie, and Kiawe have their work cut out for them as they take on their first Gym battle—and are reminded that Alolan Pokémon don’t always have the same appearance and type as their Kanto counterparts. Finally, Ash and Pikachu battle Misty and her Mega Gyarados in an epic showdown (“When Regions Collide!”)!
Under the Alolan Sun
Even though Ash has only been in the Alola region for one season so far, he’s met plenty of new friends and experienced all sorts of wild new adventures. Season 21 promises to bring even more action for Ash, Pikachu, and their classmates at the Pokémon School.
