A Pokémon GO Strategy for All Seasons
Recently, Pokémon GO introduced a dynamic weather system that affects how Trainers interact with Pokémon based on real-world weather conditions. More than a neat visual effect or simple gimmick, this meteorological modification changes the way that you should approach the game whether (heh) you’re catching Pokémon or going up against a powerful Raid Boss in a battle. Let’s take a deeper look at these updated mechanics to make sure you’re getting the most out of your Pokémon GO experience.
Climate-Based Catching
One of the more readily apparent aspects of Pokémon GO’s weather integration is that certain types of wild Pokémon appear more frequently during specific types of weather. For example, Fire-type Pokémon are more likely to be seen on sunny days and, of course, Water-type Pokémon show up in greater numbers when it’s raining. Just be aware that during matching weather conditions, weather-boosted Pokémon can be more difficult to catch than usual.
The extra challenge in catching these boosted Pokémon will prove worth it, though, as these Pokémon tend to perform better in battle. Plus, they may have higher CP, so you won’t need as much Stardust and Candy to fully power them up. Last but not least, you’ll receive extra Stardust for catching them!
To get a better idea of your boosted Pokémon’s potential, have your team leader evaluate it by selecting the Pokémon, tapping the options button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen (the circle with the three horizontal lines in it), and choosing “Appraise.” The more enthusiastic your team leader is about your Pokémon, the tougher it is. Look for praise like “breathtaking,” “can really battle with the best,” or “it can accomplish anything” as a clue that you’ve caught a top-tier Pokémon. The Pokémon you catch won’t necessarily be world-beaters even if they were influenced by the weather, but they’ll trend stronger than normal.
Barometric Battles
Of course, weather boosts don’t just affect Pokémon you catch. All the Pokémon you’ve already caught can benefit as well. If the weather corresponds to a type of attack that your Pokémon knows, such as high winds and Air Slash, that attack will do more damage. You can check your Pokémon’s summary page for exact figures of how much stronger its attacks have become.
Remember to take these stat enhancements into consideration when going up against a Pokémon in a Raid Battle. Because weather conditions affect wild Pokémon as well, Raid Battle opponents can be extra fierce if the weather conditions are right, so it’s vital to pack your party with Pokémon that know effective attacks.
For instance, the Legendary Pokémon Kyogre is a tough customer, but as a Water-type Pokémon, it’s vulnerable to Grass- and Electric-type attacks. When you challenge it in a Raid Battle, you’ll want to modify your strategy according to the weather. If it’s raining, use Electric-type attacks, as they’ll get a 20% hike in damage during showers. If the skies are sunny and clear, however, bringing Pokémon with Grass-type attacks into the fray is a better choice, as their attacks will be more effective.

Before you head outside on your Pokémon GO adventure, be sure to check the weather report in your favorite weather application. The weather information in Pokémon GO might occasionally be unavailable in some locations and isn’t as accurate as a dedicated weather app. You certainly don’t want to be caught in the rain without an umbrella—or find yourself trapped in a raging snowstorm.
With proper planning, though, you’re bound to catch some powerful Pokémon and master Raid Battles, rain or shine!
