The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo Appears!
The first Legendary Pokémon spotted in Pokémon GO EX Raids is none other than the iconic Mewtwo. The Genetic Pokémon doesn’t appear as a regular Raid Boss—instead, you’ll need to be invited to battle it. You won’t need to travel across stormy seas to track it down this time, but you will need to have an EX Raid Pass. You’ll receive one when an EX Raid Battle is set to begin at a Gym where you’ve recently defeated a Raid Boss.
The first EX Raid Passes have already been distributed, so make sure to log in to Pokémon GO and see if you’ve received one. If you haven’t received one—or if you’d like to battle Mewtwo again—keep defeating Raid Bosses at a variety of different Gyms.
Defeating the mighty Mewtwo is going to be tough, but we’re here to help. You’ll only be able to catch it using the Premier Balls earned from defeating it, so you’ll need your Pokémon to perform well in battle to maximize your chances. Suggested Pokémon
The Psychic-type Mewtwo is weak against Bug-, Dark-, and Ghost-type attacks, but taking advantage of those weaknesses will be trickier than it was with previous Legendary Pokémon. Neither Bug- nor Ghost-type Pokémon resist Psychic-type attacks, so you’ll often have to take damage to deal damage in this battle. Dark-type Pokémon match up best against Psychic-type Pokémon overall, but Steel-type and other Psychic-type Pokémon also take reduced damage. Mewtwo’s Psychic-type Fast Attacks will be super effective against Fighting-type and Poison-type Pokémon, so you’ll want to leave them in reserve.
Tyranitar is the safest answer to best Mewtwo. Its Bite and Crunch attacks are a supereffective way to taste victory, and it resists three of Mewtwo’s Charged Attacks (Psychic, Hyper Beam, and Shadow Ball). A Houndoom that knows Dark-type attacks is the only other Dark-type Pokémon with stats high enough to stand up to Mewtwo comfortably.
Pay close attention to which Charged Attack Mewtwo uses, though; the Fighting-type Focus Blast will cleave through Dark-type and Steel-type Pokémon. You can dodge attacks by swiping left or right, but we suggest readjusting your team’s composition against Focus Blast.
The surprise star of this battle may be Gyarados—it can learn the Dark-type attacks Bite and Crunch, and it resists Focus Blast, so hopefully you stocked up on Magikarp Candy during the Water Festival in March!
Bug-type Pokémon won’t resist Mewtwo’s Fast Attacks, but they’ll deal supereffective damage while resisting Focus Blast. Pinsir and Scizor’s Bug-type attacks will dish out lots of damage, and Scizor even resists Mewtwo’s Psychic-type attacks (though it lacks Fighting-type resistance). If you’re short on Metal Coats, Scyther’s Bug-type attacks hurt plenty, and it will take much less damage from Focus Blast than Scizor.
Most Trainers probably won’t have enough strong Bug types and Dark types to comprise a full party, so don’t get discouraged if you’re a little short. The only source of heavy Ghost-type damage is Gengar, but its weakness to Psychic-type attacks won’t let it stick around against Mewtwo for long. Dragonite, Ho-Oh, Moltres, and Zapdos, on the other hand, resist Focus Blast and deal impressive damage without a type advantage. A Snorlax that knows Lick will perform similarly against Mewtwo that don’t know Focus Blast, while Entei and Raikou, if you’ve caught them already, will provide solid damage against any Mewtwo.
Defeating Mewtwo will be an uphill battle, but fill out your roster with your most trusted attackers and keep tapping until the Legendary Pokémon falls.
Engineer a Catch
You won’t get many Premier Balls to catch Mewtwo once you’ve defeated it, so make each one count. Use a Golden Razz Berry before each throw, and be sure to stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.
The odds of catching Mewtwo are greatest while the target ring is at a small-enough diameter to score Nice, Great, or Excellent Throws, and throwing Curveballs can improve your chances further. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can hit Excellent Curveballs reliably, aim for Nice or Great throws instead of missing the target ring completely.
You’ll waste your Premier Balls if your target is moving around when you throw. Wait for Mewtwo to start acting up and for the target ring to disappear while it’s a size you’re comfortable throwing into, then time your throw so the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.
Legendary Pokémon are tough to catch, but don’t be discouraged if Mewtwo gets away the first time you defeat it. Stock up on useful items like Max Potions and Max Revives to try again later—Mewtwo will probably burn through your healing items quickly.
