During Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3 2017, decorated squid researcher Mr Nogami took to the stage to discuss Salmon Run, the brand new cooperative mode in Splatoon 2, coming to Nintendo Switch on July 21st! Check out the full video demonstration below.

In this mode, you and up to three other players will take on incoming waves of attacking Salmonid. Not only can these creatures swim in water, but they can also proceed on land! As they swim through the water, they collect resources for their society and can sometimes end up close to Inkling territory. To drive them back, a mysterious corporation called Grizzco calls upon Inklings to help stop their advance.

Boss Salmonids drop Golden Eggs when they are defeated and you’ll need to collect a certain quota in the allotted time to complete the objective. These Golden Eggs are a type of fuel for the Inkling world, and returning them back to Grizzco allows you to earn rewards that you can use in the other multiplayer modes. Sounds like an intriguing business deal, right?

You’ll discover many different types of Boss Salmonid and each one has a particular weapon type or strategy that is effective in defeating them. This makes it important for players to decide who’s going to take down each one and who will provide backup and support.

Watch out though, as you will lose if you do not collect the Golden Eggs before the time runs out or if all your team is eliminated. Thankfully, fallen comrades can be revived, so if you’re taken out be sure to shout for help or hammer the signal so your teammates know where you are. You must survive against three different waves to win so cooperation is very important especially when elements like fog limit your view!

The online version* of Salmon Run will be event-based – when the Salmonid strike, the Inklings will answer the call and it’s up to you to drive them back. You can also play Salmon Run with friends in local multiplayer** at any time!

The Nintendo Treehouse team played Salmon Run in local multiplayer and set the difficulty up to 80 percent by the end. Whatever you set the difficulty to, it will increase by five percent each time you finish a stage. For example, you can continue on from 100 percent in five percent increments all the way up to 200 percent. That’s very extreme! Even the most skilled researchers here at the Squid Research Lab have great difficulty at those levels so take care out there!

Every match in Salmon Run is different and things will always play out differently – even if you select the same difficulty level each time! Who knows what will happen…

Phew, information overload! We’d like to thank our esteemed colleague Mr Nogami for sharing all this fresh content with the world!

Take on the Salmonid threat when Splatoon 2 launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch on July 21st.
