Are you new to the world of Fire Emblem? It’s a long-running series of tactical role-playing games which started back in 1990. The series is beloved by fans across the world for their massive cast of characters and deep, interwoven stories. Now you can learn about the heroes of Fire Emblem and the games that made them popular in this handy primer:
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
Two kingdoms are on the brink of war. Whose side will you choose? Torn between two families, you’re the heir of Hoshido, raised by Nohrian royals. If you choose the path of Birthright, you’ll battle the corrupted king of Nohr. An army of knights, mages, archers, and more are at your command in the most tactical battles in series history.
Key characters:
RYOMA
High Prince of Hoshido, and wielder of the legendary Raijinto. He is very hard on himself and follows the bushido code.
TAKUMI
Hoshidan prince who wields a legendary bow. A bit moody, but kind to those he loves.
AZURA
Songstress. A princess raised in Hoshido after being kidnapped from Nohr. Though she hides her emotions, she is kind and wise. Her songs help her allies on the battlefield.
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
This game tells the same story that the Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright game does, only from the viewpoint of the enemy. This time, you must change your misguided kingdom from within. The gameplay is also a lot more challenging, as you are forced to deal with limited resources and more complex strategies to clear each mission.
Key characters:
LEO
Dark Knight. A Nohrian prince who excels at magic. He’s also something of a genius.
CAMILLA
Malig Knight. Elder princess of Nohr. She adores her siblings and acts as a mother figure to your character–but is a terror on the battlefield.
ELISE
Troubadour. The youngest Norhian princess. She’s playful and innocent, and loves her siblings to the point of hero worship.
Fire Emblem Awakening
If you’re new to the series, the Fire Emblem Awakening game is a great place to begin your journey. The deep and immersive fantasy storyline is told through beautiful 3D visuals and cinematics. Characters like Chrom, Lucina, and Nowi are at your command, each with a unique personality and different class type and skill set. Just plan your attack carefully – the lives of your soldiers and the future of the world depends on it. You can also download the demo at Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS.
Key characters:
CHROM
The prince of Ylisse and descendant of the Hero-King. While of noble blood, he also leads a militia known as the Shepherds. His strong conviction makes him a fine captain. The most likely to break things.
LUCINA
Chrom’s future daughter, a kind and just princess who has made it her duty to save the world. She loves her father and would do anything to keep him safe. The least likely to get a joke.
NOWI
A Manakete from no land in particular. While she looks young and likes to play outside with children, she is actually over 1,000 years old and counting. The biggest oversleeper.
