Looking Back on a Thrilling First Day of Worlds
An exciting first day of the Pokémon World Championships is coming to a close.
August 19, 2016
The final Day 1 matches are wrapping up here in San Francisco at the 2016 Pokémon World Championships. For many Pokémon TCG and video game players, their competition ends today, as only a fraction of the competitors advance. All Pokémon Video Game players who have two or fewer losses will advance to meet the Day 2 qualifiers. The number of Pokémon TCG players who advance to Day 2 will be determined at the end of the rounds, with approximately 60 players expected to advance in each age division.
The Pokémon TCG event has so far been remarkable for its continuing innovation in deck construction. We saw an amazingly diverse metagame at the US National Championships, and the introduction of international players has taken the field to another dimension. It will be exciting to follow the Day 2 action to see if new Pokémon such as Volcanion-EX have what it takes to knock off stalwarts such as Night March’s Joltik, and Pumpkaboo or Seismitoad-EX.
The competition in the Pokémon Video Game tournament has defied the expectations of many players and spectators. After a 2015 World Championships dominated by players using similar teams based around Kangaskhan and Landorus, Groudon and Xerneas seemed poised for similar domination. Instead, a variety of teams piloted by players from many different countries moved on to Day Two. Groudon with Kyogre and Rayquaza with Xerneas tied as the pairings that sent the most players to Day Two with perfect records. Day Two introduces many new players to the field, which could tip the tournament either further toward innovation or back toward more conservative strategies.
The Pokkén Tournament World Championships technically start tomorrow, but there was no lack of fighting action today. The last chance qualifier gave players without an invitation one more opportunity to qualify for the main event tomorrow. The lucky few who won will compete against top competition from around the globe in the first Pokkén Tournament World Championships on Saturday.
Day 2 action starts tomorrow at 9 a.m. Pacific. Be sure to tune in to Pokemon.com/Live to watch live streaming of Pokémon TCG, video game, and Pokkén Tournament matches. Good luck to everyone here in San Francisco as they all continue to compete for the title of World Champion!
