Join us as we look at the ingredients that make a Kirby game tick.

Kirby games are unique. Defined as platformers, a genre that typically focuses on relentless tests of your hopping dexterity, Kirby games tend to have a stronger focus on our pink hero’s ability to inhale his enemies, swallow them, and gain access to powerful Copy Abilities with which to dispatch enemies, solve puzzles and unearth secrets as he undertakes various missions to save Planet Popstar.

Kirby titles are so unique we’ve decided to list five things that make Kirby: Planet Robobot for Nintendo 3DS family systems stand out as a unique platformer.

Kirby Planet RobobotCopy Abilities

Inhale an enemy and Kirby may be empowered with a Copy Ability! These range from giving Kirby a sword with which to slice through enemies, to the ability to breathe fire, wield a massive hammer, or even become a wheel to speed through levels!

Copy Abilities are anything but simple, however. Jump attacks, dash attacks, dash jump attacks – there are many different ways to take on the enemies which stand in your way! Kirby games give you a lot of room to show off in unique ways as you slide through levels with skill.

Also, for Kirby aficionados, Kirby: Planet Robobot features 3 completely new Copy Abilities in the form of the toxic gas blasting Poison, pill throwing Doctor and psychic ESP…

Puzzles

Levels in Kirby titles also feature many collectibles off the beaten path, and lots of these will be inaccessible to players who aren’t paying attention to their surroundings. Puzzles in Kirby: Planet Robobot frequently ask you to use Copy Abilities in unique ways, such as lighting a fuse with fire and reaching a cannon before it explodes, or activating ESP’s attack to reach far-away switches. Kirby titles reward the observant.

Kirby Planet RobobotRobots!

The real star of the show, the Robobot Armour. This suit of alien technology powers Kirby up and lets him smash through enemies as if they were thin air, and that’s just for starters…

The Robobot Armour can even get in on the Copy Ability action by scanning enemies and activating a variety of different modes. Puzzle sections are designed with these Robobot modes in mind, occasionally even requiring you to hop in and out of the Robobot Armour, and there are even certain action sections, such as scrolling shooter Jet sections, that give the gameplay some extremely unique interludes.

Secrets

A Kirby game wouldn’t be a Kirby game without a huge number of secrets to discover and Kirby: Planet Robobot is no different! The most obvious secrets are the stickers that you can find and then use to decorate your Robobot Armour. Hidden in levels, some of these are references to Kirby’s past, but others are extremely unique pieces of art that are sure to impress players. There are plenty more secrets aside from these, but we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprises…

If there’s one thing that’s as true for Kirby: Planet Robobot as any Kirby game before it, it’s that even when the story is done there’s still plenty to see and do. Aside from unearthing all of the collectibles there are new, challenging game modes that await once the final boss has fallen. You can even StreetPass your best times in these challenges with other players, meaning they can quickly become time trial obsessions.

Alongside these core modes there are some unique minigames included in Kirby: Planet Robobot! Kirby 3D Rumble is an arena-based challenge that lets you move Kirby in three dimensions, breathing in enemies and launching them in 3D to try and hit enemies in chains for high scores. Aim for the platinum medals!

Another mode is Team Kirby Clash, a mode for up to four players that has you tackling a variety of fierce bosses and trying to beat them in the quickest time possible. The game has a light RPG design, letting you choose Copy Abilities with unique powers (one even lets you heal your allies). Team Kirby Clash can be enjoyed by up to four players via Download Play* and Local Play**.

So there you have it. With its powerful Copy Abilities, strong puzzles, varied Robobot Armour gameplay and range of game modes, Kirby: Planet Robobot offers a generous, unique platforming title on Nintendo 3DS!

Kirby: Planet Robobot is available from shops and as a downloadable version from Nintendo eShop now, only on Nintendo 3DS family systems. Also out now, the Kirby Collection of amiibo includes amiibo of Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and Waddle Dee. In addition, Kirby: Planet Robobot – amiibo Bundle is out now, which includes a copy of the game and a Kirby Collection amiibo of Kirby.***
