I sincerely don’t think we’re gonna see a GameCube Virtual Console on the Wii U anytime soon, and here is why.

Just the other day I went retro and started playing Baten Kaitos, a GameCube classic, on my original Wii. At that time, something dawned on me.

Nintendo has sold over 100 million Wiis. The original Wii was backwards-compatible with the GameCube. Overall, minus the Wii Family Edition plus the original GameCube’s install base, that’s indeed pretty much a 100 million Nintendo devices perfectly capable of running Nintendo GameCube titles.

Considering the GameCube to have not been a financial success, many GameCube games are still out there somewhere available on the market, supported by what I just defined to be a staggering install base. Such an install base would be a dramatic competition from Nintendo themselves for a Wii U GameCube Virtual Console.

Other than that, the GameCube had analog triggers, which both the Wii U GamePad and the Wii U Pro Controller lack. Without analog triggers, some GameCube titles such as Nintendo’s own Super Mario Sunshine would not be optimally playable.

I think a GameCube Virtual Console is still a long way to go. On the Wii U, we still have the GameBoy Advance VC to go through. Next we have the Nintendo DS Virtual Console. We’ll also definitely see the Nintendo 64 VC since this one previously was on the Wii as well. Couple this with some non-Nintendo Virtual Consoles (such as from past SEGA hardware), and the GameCube VC seems pretty far away down the pipeline.

Who knows: we might actually see it coming on Nintendo’s next console.
