Virizion Pokémon GO Raid Battle Tips
The Grassland Pokémon, Virizion, will soon be appearing atop Pokémon GO Gyms, so hoof out to participate in a Raid Battle the next time you see a five-star Egg about to hatch. The Legendary Pokémon Virizion boasts the unusual type combination of Grass and Fighting, so it’ll make a unique companion if you’re able to catch it from Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at 1 p.m. PST until Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 1 p.m. PST. Just like with Cobalion and Terrakion , we’ve got tips to help you reign victorious over Virizion—and hopefully catch it, too.
The Premier Balls you earn when defeating Virizion will be the only Poké Balls you can use to catch it, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Maximize your chances by helping your team take over the Gym before the raid starts, battling alongside your friends, and picking Pokémon that will perform well in battle. Be sure to learn how to train Pokémon in Pokémon GO to get your team up to speed, and then read on for some tips for facing Virizion.
Tips for Battling Virizion in Pokémon GO
Focus on flight. Virizion has six type weaknesses, but it’ll take far more damage from one particular type—Flying. If you have a Moltres that knows both Wing Attack and Sky Attack, a Rayquaza that was taught Air Slash and Aerial Ace, a Honchkrow that knows Peck and Sky Attack, or even the unheralded Unfezant wielding Air Slash and Sky Attack, it’ll make this battle a breeze no matter the weather. After that, consider using the mighty Mewtwo and its powerful Psychic-type attacks.
Then, consider the weather. If you don’t have a full coop of Flying-type Pokémon to deploy, you’ll do best by adjusting the rest of your team to suit the weather. If you’re battling under sunny skies (and lucky you, this time of year), Fire-type Pokémon, like Entei and Chandelure, are great choices. Continuing down your list of Flying-type Pokémon is probably the best choice in any other weather, but don’t forget that Ice-type attacks do more damage in snowy weather and Fairy-type attacks do more during cloudy weather.
Play around Virizion’s Charged Attacks. You won’t know which attacks the specific Virizion you’re fighting will use until after you’ve seen it in action, but if you do happen to learn its moves, you can tailor your team a little to reduce the number of healing items you’ll need to use. Virizion can’t learn any Fast Attacks that match its types—it might know the Normal-type Quick Attack or the Psychic-type Zen Headbutt—but its more-powerful Charged Attacks may be worth adjusting your strategy for. Virizion’s Stone Edge will make quick work of your Flying-type Pokémon, while the Legendary Pokémon can dish out some serious damage with the Grass-type Leaf Blade or Fighting-type Close Combat against Pokémon that don’t resist those types.
Throw Your Premier Balls Carefully against Legendary Pokémon
You’ll earn a limited number of Premier Balls by defeating Virizion, and you must use these to catch it, so take careful aim to make each one count. If you battle alongside your friends, you can earn extra Premier Balls, so be sure to bring friends with you. Using a Golden Razz Berry before each throw will vastly increase your chances of success. You can stock up on them beforehand by defeating other Raid Bosses.
Your chance of catching a Pokémon is greatest when the size of the target ring is small enough for you to score Excellent Throws. Throwing Curveballs can improve your chances even more. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can reliably make Excellent Curveball Throws, aim for Nice Throws or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.
Lastly, don’t waste your Premier Balls by throwing while the Pokémon is moving around. Wait for it to start acting up and for its target ring to disappear, then time your throw so that the Premier Ball lands as the target ring reappears.
Like all Legendary Pokémon, Virizion is tricky to catch, so don’t be discouraged if it escapes your first encounter. Stock up on useful items, like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries, and try again later with some friends.
