Find out what it is that makes Bravely Second: End Layer special.

So, what is it that makes Bravely Second: End Layer special?

Control cats as a Catmancer, throw cakes as a Patissier, and play as a guy obsessed with gravy. Have you always wanted to build a base on the moon? Go for it. It’s the quintessential JRPG, stuffed full of quirky and unforgettable aspects unique to Bravely Second: End Layer. What more could you want?

You have my attention. I presume there’s an epic story?

Of course! But it’s not just saving the world. Sinister work is afoot so you’ll need to be on your guard, and there’s something dark in protagonist Yew Geneolgia’s family history to uncover. Away from the main storyline, there are also various disputes to settle across the world of Luxendarc which will reward you with new jobs based on your moral decisions.

Awesome! Tell me about the battling.

Bravely Second: End Layer is made by Square Enix, the publisher behind the FINAL FANTASY and DRAGON QUEST series, and features similar combat but with a twist. Default to defend and save up turns, Brave to unleash attacks all at once, or freeze time with Bravely Second to make a flurry of attacks in tough situations. Put together the perfect party and figure out the best tactics to take down any enemy.

I hear there are 30 jobs? That sounds like work.

There are 12 new jobs in Bravely Second: End Layer, making a total of 30. All that means is that the number of available spells and abilities you can use to take down foes has almost doubled. It also brings even more customisation to the game with new additions like the Wizard’s spellcraft ability, allowing you to modify spells to suit any situation. No work, just more fun.

And the grinding?

The game options from Bravely Default have returned. You can still change difficulty mid-game and turn the encounter rate up or down as you wish, so you can run to a save point unopposed when you’re hurting, or encounter an enemy every few steps when you want to grind. Furthermore, Bravely Second has also added the ‘Bring it on!” function, which means that whenever you defeat an enemy in the first round of combat, you can choose to battle again for increased experience, currency and job points.

What about the bosses?

Bravely Second: End Layer is chock full of formidable and memorable bosses. They’ll test your party and tactics, and reward you with a new job asterisk should you defeat them. They’re no pushovers, so make sure you’re prepared and everything will be gravy.

What’s the art like?

The art in Bravely Second: End Layer is superb. The characters, location and enemies are presented in a familiar and beloved JRPG style, but the best comes whenever you’re in a town, city or dungeon area. If you wait for a few seconds in any town or city, the camera will pan out to reveal a beautiful and detailed piece of art.

Do I need to have played Bravely Default to understand Bravely Second?

Absolutely not. Sure, if you have played Bravely Default, there are plenty of homages to the original game, but it isn’t necessary to enjoy. You’ll get a roundup of the events of Bravely Default when you start the game, so you’re clued up on what’s been happening in Luxendarc before you set off on your journey.

Okay, you’ve got me interested. What next?

We recommend downloading the free prelude ‘Bravely Second: The Balled of the Three Cavaliers’* from the Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo 3DS family system. Set prior to the events of the full game, this prelude will let you dive into the world of Bravely Second: End Layer, get acquainted with the characters, cities and gameplay, and prepare yourself for a truly remarkable adventure.

Hold on, what was that about gravy?

Well, you’ll just have to play on and find out! #ForTheGravy
